Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH ) is a nonmalignant (non-cancerous) growth in the size of the prostate. This increase in the size of the prostate gland is produced by a relative increase in estrogen (female hormones) over testosterone (male hormone), which appears in men with age. The prostate, when growing, can progressively compress the urethra and cause, therefore, difficulty urinating. This happens because this compression prevents the flow of urine from the bladder to the urethra to the outside. The possible consequences are retention of urine in the bladder or reflux of urine into the kidneys and a need to urinate frequently. If the inflammation is very severe, the urinary system can be completely blocked. BPH is a very common disease in men: although it usually begins after the age of 30, it is very rare for it to manifest before the age of 40. At age 60, approximately, more than 50% of men suffer from BPH and between 70 and 80 years up to 90% have some of its symptoms.
